Pictured above is the wedding of Frank William Reid and Edith May Clary on 6 OCT 1928 in Earlestown, Lancashire. The Reid family are reputed to be from Scotland, although the earliest evidence I can find of the family links them to Dalston, near Carlisle, in Cumberland. John Reid at the time of the 1841 Census worked as a cotton spinner. His son William moved to Crewe in the 1850's to work for the London and North-Western Railway Company as an engine fitter. Frank William Reid, born in Crewe in 1905, was the grandson of William. His wedding picture shows him in his army uniform; it was through the army that the Reid's eventually settled in Nottingham.

According to family legend the Clary's were a monied family from France, a tale that's yet to be proved. In the 1830's the Clary's were living in Mile/Stepney in London, although the Census evidence suggests that John Clary was born in Essex

Within the family tree there are two separate branches of the Woodward's, although given the proximity of the villages they lived it's a possibility that both branches are linked. One branch hails from Cropwell Bishop, a village approximately 9 miles south east of Nottingham. The earliest entry of a Woodward in the parish records that can be linked to the family appears in 1694 when Thomas, the son of Benjamin & Mary, was baptised. The family continued to live in the village until the turn of the 20th century, employed largely as agricultural labourers. Cropwell is famous for the fact that one of George Bush's ancestors originated from the village. Common with many families the Woodward's gravitated towards Nottingham as the city began to industrialise. The first Woodward to marry in the city was Richard, who married Jane Maltby in 1889

The Maltby's are also linked to the second branch of the Woodward family, a branch that originated from Barton in Fabis, a village 4 miles south of Nottingham. The Woodward's first appear in the parish records in 1584 when Marcellian Woodward married Isabell Dickinson. In 1702 Joyce Woodward married Hugh Maltby, who was the grandfather*4 of Jane Maltby

The Maltby's are probably the most 'famous' of the families in the tree, they were originally from Orston, a village close to Cropwell Bishop, and the family were persecuted by the authorities for being quakers. As a result members of the family emigrated to America along with William Penn who was responsible for the founding of Pennsylvania.

Other branches hail from Bedfordshire (Crosley, Wilkins & Odell), Lincolnshire (Cartwright), Cheshire (Vickers, Dentith, Cooke & Stanway), North Nottinghamshire (Rodgers) & Cambridgeshire (Archer, Pollington & Johnson).
